Haiti and Israel
I quote below from this article found on Aish.com – what it was that YHWH saw in Abraham; the qualities of greatness. To sum it up succinctly – they are to reach out, not matter what, in a time of need to help another; to act in such a way that says, “All men are my brothers.”
The defining characteristic of greatness: the willingness to intercede when witness to the difficulties faced by others.
These are the only three things the Torah sees fit to record about the life of the man divinely chosen for greatness. In Jewish law a threefold repetition assures constancy of character. Three times Moses demonstrated the one trait more than any other that God used as the defining characteristic of greatness and leadership — the willingness to intercede when witness to the difficulties faced by others.
There are lessons to learn in living life daily, to the best of our ability; in recognizing that each day is a gift. In the tragedy that shall be known as Haiti, may we remember to be fully alive each day that is gifted unto us – we deserve it no more nor less than any other human being – for in the eyes of YHWH all men were created equal (for any ladies reading this, the term men is indeed generic).
