Mother Nature Warns Us: Will We Hear?
As I sit down to write this note I review in my mind the news articles that have crossed my desk this past week; news about volcano eruptions in Iceland and ongoing reports of earthquakes world wide and sit here with mouth agape, wondering how many people really see what is going on.
It’s not hard for me to understand that perhaps most people do not see what is really going on, what is happening that will impact our human lives in ways that we cannot fathom, because mainstream press has our eyes glued on the almighty dollar bill. We are so materially focused on things and stuff, but hell, what if we have the material: that is to say the bank accounts filled with money such that we have no worries or concerns, houses bought and paid for, children’s education taken care of; what if we have all this stuff…and because we couldn’t get our eyes unglued from the almighty dollar, we failed to recognize the, “so what” factor. So what, we have all this stuff, but there is nothing left standing to do with it?
The earth is spitting out things from beneath it’s surface; speaking of an anger that has laid dormant for how many years and centuries…we can only imagine. My reaction to the volcano in Iceland was, “What an odd mixture?” I say odd, because when I think of Iceland I think of cold and frozen, not hot and boiling over such as is happening with the volcanic eruptions.
With our eyes glued on the surface, the almighty dollar and the impact on the economy, we seem to have tunnel vision. Just as a person must look within him/herself to find the causes of his/her anxiety, successes, failures, fears and all those things; not point the accusatory finger outward, so too we must look beneath the surface of the almighty dollar, for it is but a symptom of something much deeper that is rotting away at our world as we know it.
So what if we have all the money in the world to afford all the stuff in the world? If we don’t start looking beneath the surface, all the money in the world will be as useless as (pardon the expression) “tits on a bull”, because there will be nothing left to spend it on; even our fine houses will disintegrate before our very eyes; the work place, the educational facilities…all of these will have disappeared if we don’t start seriously looking at and trying to figure out what is happening with dear Mother Earth; why is nature so very angry with humanity?
“Lift your eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh thy help.”
In reading that paraphrased verse from Scripture, I see a message that says to me, “Look, human kind. All your genius, all your puny human efforts aren’t going to help you.” It goes on to speak to me, “I am the Creator of all that was, is and is to come – including the earth that spews out her anger at your violation of her.” And continuing, “I am the Alpha and the Omega. I am the sustainer of all…yes, you are human because I provide the lungs, the mechanism for them to work and the air that you inhale, that keeps you walking about.”
The ultimate message, for me, is that unless I turn my eyes away from the things of the physical and return unto the Spirit, praying in the Spirit, seeking His guidance and His direction, all is futile. It brings to mind the words of Ecceliastes that speaks of the vanity; all is vanity, is it not? All our material seeking and wanting and lusting after; does it not have its roots in vanity? And yet another Scripture pops up even as I write this, and that is, “You have not because you ask not…and when you do ask, you ask in order to consume it upon or satisfy your own lusts.”
God help us all, for all that He has created is indeed in utter turmoil; the seen and the unseen and I know that it is not going to get better, but conversely shall worsen with each passing moment of my human existence.
I ask myself, “What will you do when the rug is ripped out from beneath your feet?” To whom will you be able to turn, for all will be in the same sinking boat? Will it take an utter wipe out of all that exists, or the certain threat of that happening, for us to finely drop our human efforts and cry out, “Abba. Father, help us!”
And so, the economy of the almighty dollar that has kept us mesmerized and fixed, well it is crashing in all around us, and at the hands of a volcano; something that man did not do, but nature did. An article I read says that the airline industry is losing about $200,000 million a day because of grounded flights. How will they make it up; increase the fares? And then what; something else will happen, or simply the boomerang effect – we won’t be able to take those extended travel holidays because we won’t be able to afford them, and the domino effect continues.
“If my people who are called by my Name, will humble themselves….”
What more will it take to bring us to our knees, to have us lift our “eyes unto the hills” where our only help will be found?
