Uniquely Me

Throughout the journey in linear time called life, as long as the human has existed, there have been cliques, organizations, groups, gangs, clubs, societies and such.  The journey of man has been one of “belonging” to this or that organization; of fitting in, becoming like another, moulding yourself after someone who has gone before, whom you admire or simply because society has put him or her on a pedestal, and you and I, being human and by nature wanting the approval and applause of others, we attempt to “become” like someone else.

In seeking to join a group or club or even to model myself after someone else, am I doing myself justice; am I discrediting and devaluing the workmanship of the Creator; saying to Him that He messed up when He crafted me and I’d better lend a hand and fix what He did wrong?  Perhaps I am not speaking those words, but by carrying on those action, I am sending out the same message.

We are told, and it has apparently been scientifically proven (by a study no doubt) that every snow flake that falls to the earth is unique; that there are no two snow flakes the same.

We are told that all that exists in the world was created first and then in the act of creating YHWH saved the best for last; He created human kind.  He not only created human kind, but He created us in His Image.  Now I don’t know about you, but when I try to get an image of what the Creator might look like if I attempt to do so by attribution of human qualities, then I am limiting and moulding Him to be in my image.

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

John 1:24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.”

If, however, I believe the truth that you cannot be or give something that you are not, then for me to begin to understand the depth and breadth and magnitude and awesomeness of who my Creator is – I only need to look at spring as it unfolds in its manifold glory or fall that brings in the dying off of nature, going out in a kaleidoscope of wondrous colours; or the mountain peaks or valleys carpeted in lilies and daisies, or the golden glitter of the sun dancing on the still and quiet lakes or the roaring angers of the ocean waves in the midst of a storm struck with lightning bolts that light up the sky.  All these things are but a tiny spectre of He who Created them – and you and I, we are made in His image.

So tell me brothers and sisters, if He took such care to create the snow flakes that are so beautifully and uniquely different, how much more so you and I, His greatest creation.

Today it seems if you are a loner, or you are different or unique; if you don’t join this club or a group and fit in with their beliefs; if you speak differently of things with a new and different perspective – then you don’t belong and you are labelled as an outsider and not a team player or follower.

You can have a team and it will be the most marvellous and successful team made up of spokes of different colours, ideas and hues; many that fit together to form a team diverse and yet finely tuned with a plethora of any number of possibilities.  If a puzzle were a bunch of pieces all of the same shape and colour – firstly it would never fit together, and secondly even if it did, how very dull and boring.

Uniquely me and how grateful I am.  In denying that uniqueness, I deny society the benefit of what I have been given as an attribute to contribute to the wholeness and beauty of a society made up of everything different, but musically tuned and working together for the common good.

Think about an orchestra with its winds, pipes, percussions, strings etc.  If the orchestra was made up of just one type of instrument, how very monotonous and boring it too would be.

Think of the spring time and the gardens you might pass by.  First, perhaps, rows of tulip beds; one row is all the same colour (how nice, how bright); the next row was a mixture of perhaps two or three colours (wow; gorgeous, the red makes the yellow look yellower (if such a word); and then, there’s a row with at least a dozen different colours!  I don’t know about you, but I would stop dead in my tracks and marvel at the glorious splendour set out before me – difficulty focusing on any one colour; seeing how beautifully they blend together, and yet, individually they stand out in their own uniqueness.

Uniquely me, but with you and others how marvellous and how well we fit together.  As I uncover the special uniqueness of me, allowing it to surface and develop, the world around me becomes a better and brighter place and we are all blessed by this uniqueness.  If I do not allow me to uncover my uniqueness, we will both lose and my little corner of the world won’t be as bright as it could have been.

I know that YHWH knew what He was doing when He created me, even if I have through the years doubted His sanity and offhandedly suggested He could have improved:  given me a singing voice or made me a painter or great orator.  But He didn’t create me like that, but did create me with abilities that only I have and only I can express.

A life truly lived is a life that has allowed its uniqueness to unfold before humanity’s eyes.  It is a self-expression and a thank you to He who created me for having done such a bloody marvellous job!

Being made in His image, He who is omnipotent, omniscient, and as we often referred to Him, God Al-mighty; He who created then are we not intended to be co-creators for that is what we are, being made in His image.  I do not believe that He created any of us to be other than co-creators; to continue the work begun by Him in the creation of all that was, is and is to come.  And, each of us is unique and has a special and unique purpose.  If I do not allow myself to unfold and have that purpose expressed, I do both myself and the world and injustice and deprive it of something wonderful and special.

1 Timothy 4:4 For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,

YHWH does not create without purpose and He definitely loves variety.  He could have either completely forgotten about man; certainly He didn’t need us to help Him.  But He wanted us to share in what He was doing, to allow Him to continue creating in and through us.

Let your light shine; only you have that light, that ability…that uniqueness.
