8 Steps to Reclaim Zest for Work: Getting Passion Out of Your Profession

22 May

I read the following in one of my many books and was so impressed (okay, I heard the message) that I copied it and had it posted at my desk for those moments when I needed to become “grounded” again.  If the author or anyone who is reading this cares to let me know which book I might have read this in, I will edit this article accordingly to give that person credit for his/her writings.  Shammah

1.  Practice Positive Thinking and Positive Work Choice. Listen to yourself. Become conscious of all the negatives you speak or communicate – Is this a bad time? Yikes, try, “Did I get you at a good time?”  Never suggest a negative. I can’t do that until becomes I will be able to do this when. Positive talk and action begets positive outcomes, negative begets negative. You choose.

2.  Project Personal Self Worth.  Learn how to blow your own horn. Don’t brag, just tell it how it is. Be proud of yourself not just others in your life. Walk tall.

3.  Protect Sense of Humor. For your own sanity, instill laughter and humor into your work life, making sure it is appropriate, tasteful and timely. We choose how to react to situations, if it has already happened; it is what it is, try laughter.

4.  Play with Perspective. Is the glass half empty or half full, depends on your perspective doesn’t it? If your perspective doesn’t jive with the 3 points above, try shifting it to achieve more positive outcomes.

5.  Profess Purpose. Delve deep down into your psyche to determine why you think and behave the way you do. If you dig deep enough it might be your ego that needs stroking, and that’s ok, and know that to be so. Think about it, how can you link the why up to your life purpose.

6.  Preserve Energy and Enthusiasm. Know what energizes and motivates you, what turns you on. There are 2 types of energy: physical and emotional, know what is best for you to make full use of both. Check your life style for diet, fitness and fun and who you have in your life get rid of the toxic people; cheerleaders give energy, find them.

7.  Promise to Persevere. Funks pass just like crazes. Find ways to get out of yourself, your funk, and discover what you like about your job, the people, and the opportunities. Look for the humor. See #1.

8.  Perpetuate Relationships. Having high interpersonal skills is the #1 emotional intelligence skill required in the workplace today. Love yourself and you’ll love people. Become a great listener, look to meet new people and get to know them. Stay connected and helps others.  See #6.

Spring Cleaning

09 Mar

Nature can teach us so much about how to take care of ourselves.

It’s March as I write this blog.  It came to me this morning as I was driving in to work.  Stopped for a red light I looked around.  I saw brown, dead grass littered with debris that had gathered over the winter.  I know my city, and soon teams of community volunteers will be out picking up the debris and removing it to a garbage dump.  As people we like to take care of our surroundings, not liter so that we can enjoy the beauty that nature has to offer.  A bed of beautiful budding flowers isn’t very appealing if there is garbage strewn all around and in it.  Besides being unattractive, likely the garbage is also not healthy for the garden, the flowers, and generally speaking mother nature.

My thoughts turned to me, the person.  They turned inwards to my soul, my spirit, my real self.  I thought about all the garbage and debris that I’d accumulated, not just over the winter months, but throughout all seasons and wondered about spring cleaning.  If I but even once a year, as we do for mother nature, did some spring cleaning of my soul and removed all the ingested garbage:  negative thoughts and attitudes, wow my burden would surely be lightened and my step would have a new found spring in it.

But we humans, well we don’t just allow garbage to accumulate over the winter months; we allow it to go on all year round, for every breath we take.  Yet seldom do we even think about it and the need to do some clean up; to get rid of the garbage.

Garbage in, garbage out is the saying.  Perhaps that is why my attitude becomes overly negative and my words unkind.  I cannot expel or demonstrate anything but what is in me.

It’s time for some spring cleaning of the soul.  Anyone want to join in?  Not that I am asking you to do my cleaning; only I can do that for only I know what needs to be dealt with and removed.
